A bed determines more than just how you sleep. It is often the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom and, as such, immediately the focal point of the room. Beds with wings add extra character to that focal point: the sides of the headboard extend forward, giving the bed a luxurious, sheltered appearance. Ideal if you want your bedroom to look neat and warm, without having to change the entire room.
This bed style fits well with a modern, hotel-chic, or classic interior, but can also work surprisingly beautifully in a tranquil Japandi bedroom. The right choice mainly depends on the space, the material, and how you use the bed daily.
What exactly are beds with wings?
In a bed with wings, the headboard has upright, forward-curving sections on both sides. These are also called side wings. They make the headboard optically wider and give the bed a clear frame. This quickly makes a simple bed frame look fuller and more luxurious.
The wings usually have a decorative function, but they also offer practical comfort. Those who like to sit upright to read, watch TV, or check their phone for a bit can lean comfortably against a high and soft headboard. The side wings also provide a more secure feeling, especially in a spacious bedroom where a low bed might otherwise seem a bit lost.
Please note: a bed with wings visually and sometimes literally takes up more space than a standard bed. In a compact room, measuring is therefore not a detail, but a prerequisite for a good purchase.
Start with the right size
The mattress size is the starting point. A single bed of 90 x 200 cm is suitable for a child's room, guest room, or small bedroom. For two people, 140, 160, and 180 cm wide beds are the usual choices. The wider the bed, the more important it is to leave enough walking space on both sides.
Don't just look at the width of the mattress. The headboard of beds with wings often extends on both sides, and the wings can protrude several centimeters forward. Always check the total outer dimensions of the bed frame. Preferably, keep about 60 cm of free space next to the bed. This makes making the bed, vacuuming, and getting in and out much more pleasant.
The height also deserves attention. A high headboard looks beautiful in a room with sufficient ceiling height and a calm wall behind it. In a small bedroom, a very high, dark headboard can look heavy. In such cases, opt for a lighter material, a less deep wing shape, or a model with slender legs.
Consider doors, windows, and radiators
The placement of the bed is at least as crucial as its design. Preferably place the headboard against a solid wall to bring peace and symmetry to the bed. Check that the wings do not obstruct a window, switch, radiator, or electrical outlet. Especially if you want to use nightstands, you'll want to maintain enough space on both sides.
Is the bed under a sloped roof? Then measure at the height where the headboard will be placed. A high bed with wings can be beautiful, but not if the wings press against the sloped ceiling or make the whole too dominant.
Choose a fabric that suits your daily use
Most beds with wings are upholstered. This feels comfortable and immediately softens the bedroom. However, not every fabric is equally suitable for every household. The appearance is important, but maintenance and ease of use weigh just as heavily.
Velour has a rich, warm look and changes color slightly depending on the direction of the fabric. It is a good choice for those who value atmosphere and use the bedroom calmly. Keep in mind that streaks, dust, and pressure marks may be more visible on velour. Regularly vacuuming gently with a soft upholstery brush helps keep the fabric neat.
A woven fabric, such as linen-look or polyester weave, is often a bit more forgiving. These materials fit well with a calm, natural interior and are usually easier to maintain daily. For children, pets, or a bedroom that is used intensively, a tightly woven, durable upholstery is often the most practical choice.
Faux leather or leather-look gives a sleek appearance and is easy to wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth. On the other hand, this material feels less warm than fabric and does not fit every living style. So it depends on your preference: do you primarily want a soft hotel feeling, or do you want to be able to clean quickly and easily?
Color determines the atmosphere in the bedroom
A bed with wings attracts attention. The color of the headboard therefore greatly influences the atmosphere of the room. Beige, sand, taupe, and light gray are safe choices if you want a calm base. They combine easily with wooden furniture, white walls, and bedding in different colors.
Dark green, anthracite, deep blue, or black make more of a statement. These colors look good in a larger bedroom or against a light wall. Combine a dark headboard with light duvet covers and sufficient lighting so that the room doesn't become gloomy.
Do you want to regularly change accessories? Then choose a neutral bed and add color with pillows, throws, curtains, or a bedspread. This is more economical and practical than buying a new bed as soon as your taste changes.
Create balance with lighting and accessories
With a high headboard, lighting next to the bed is extra important. Wall lamps or compact bedside lamps provide targeted light without cluttering the nightstand. Warm white light makes upholstered fabric look softer and more luxurious, while bright, cool light quickly makes the bedroom less inviting.
Do not place too much decoration around the bed. The wings and headboard are already strong design elements. Two matching nightstands, a lamp on both sides, and calm bedding are often sufficient. If you want more atmosphere, opt for texture instead of extra items: a coarse throw, a soft rug, or curtains with a beautiful drape do a lot for the overall look.
Pay attention to the construction under the upholstery
A beautiful headboard is nice, but sleeping comfort starts with the basics. Check if the bed is suitable for your mattress and slatted base, or if a box spring construction is included. A sturdy frame prevents creaking and ensures that the bed stays beautiful longer, especially if you often lean against the headboard.
Also look at the legs and the free space under the bed. A model on higher legs looks airier and makes cleaning easier. A low model, on the other hand, gives a calm, luxurious look, but can be less practical if you want to use storage space under the bed. For a bed with storage, it is wise to determine beforehand how often you will need that storage. Lifting a heavy mattress daily is less convenient than occasionally storing seasonal bedding.
Upon delivery, always check if the headboard fits well through the stairwell, hallway, and bedroom door. Large upholstered parts are not always easy to maneuver in a narrow hallway. If assembly is required, prepare a soft surface beforehand to protect the fabric during unpacking.
How to keep a winged bed beautiful
With a few regular habits, an upholstered bed will stay fresh longer. Vacuum the headboard regularly on a low setting with a clean attachment. Dab small stains immediately with a slightly damp cloth and do not use aggressive cleaning agents, unless the care instructions explicitly allow it. Rubbing can enlarge a stain and damage the fibers.
Do not place the bed directly against a damp exterior wall and ventilate the bedroom daily. This helps not only the mattress but also the upholstery and the wall behind the headboard. Rotate or flip your mattress according to the manufacturer's advice, so that your bed remains comfortable and the headboard retains its function as a comfortable backrest.
A winged bed works best when it not only looks beautiful in a product photo but also suits the room where you wake up every morning. Measure carefully, choose a fabric that suits your household, and give the bed the peaceful place it deserves. Then the bedroom will naturally become a place you'll gladly go to earlier.
